Vortex Binoculars
Vortex has 17 binoculars on The Bino List, priced from $100 to $1,799, spanning general purpose, hunting, birding. The least expensive Vortex model here is the Vortex Triumph HD 10x42 at $100. Compare the full lineup below.
Vortex came out of a bird-feeding store. Dan and Margie Hamilton ran a Wild Birds Unlimited franchise from 1986 before launching the Vortex brand in 2002, and the company, still headquartered in Barneveld, Wisconsin, now describes itself as employee-owned. Its binoculars are sold mostly to hunters, and every one of them carries the same VIP warranty: Vortex repairs or replaces a damaged or defective product at no charge, excluding only loss, theft, deliberate damage and cosmetic wear.
Because the warranty is identical from bottom to top, the tiers differ only in glass and build. Triumph HD ($100) and Crossfire HD ($139 to $169) are plain-prism entry models. Diamondback HD ($169 to $270) adds phase-corrected, dielectric-coated prisms. Viper HD ($470 to $549) is the first tier with ED glass and a locking diopter. Razor UHD ($1,749 to $1,799) moves to a magnesium body and is the current flagship. The Razor HD 8x42, 10x42 and 10x50 sit between them at $980 to $1,089, but Vortex's own range now shows only a 12x50 under that name, so treat those three as remaining stock.
Owners are consistent about where each step pays. Most who compare the Crossfire HD and Diamondback HD say the Diamondback's wider sharp zone, lower color fringing and better dusk view justify the extra money, and the Diamondback HD 8x42 is the usual first serious binocular. Viper HD owners praise the contrast and the 8x42's 18mm eye relief, while the stiff focus wheel is the most repeated complaint. Razor HD owners like the light 24 oz open-bridge body but report eyecup gaskets that peel loose. Razor UHD owners rate the low-light image close to European flagships and complain about weight and glare toward a low sun.
Check two numbers before ordering. The Razor UHD 8x42 weighs 32.4 oz against 24.2 oz for the Razor HD 8x42, a difference owners feel on long carries. And several 10x models trim eye relief: the Crossfire HD 10x42 and Diamondback HD 10x42 have 15mm and the Diamondback HD 10x28 14mm, tight for many glasses wearers, where their 8x42 siblings give 17mm.

Vortex binoculars: common questions
Does the Vortex VIP warranty require a receipt or the original owner?▾
Vortex describes the VIP warranty as unlimited, unconditional and lifetime, covering damage or defects however they happened. It excludes loss, theft, deliberate damage and cosmetic damage that does not affect performance, and service starts by phone or the online form.
Is the Vortex Diamondback HD worth the step up from the Crossfire HD?▾
Owners who have used both mostly say yes. The Diamondback HD 8x42 ($230) has phase-corrected, dielectric-coated prisms that the Crossfire HD 8x42 ($139) lacks, and owners report a larger sharp zone, less color fringing and a brighter image at dusk.
Should I buy a Razor HD on closeout or a new Razor UHD?▾
The Razor HD 8x42 ($980) is about 8 oz lighter than the Razor UHD 8x42 ($1,749) and owners rate its image highly, though eyecup gaskets can work loose. The UHD is brighter at last light and is the model Vortex currently lists in full.
